Indiana One-Party
Licensing & Regulation
Indiana licenses PIs through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, Private Investigator and Security Guard Licensing Board, under IC 25-30-1. Applicants must be 21+, demonstrate two years of experience or equivalent, pass an examination, and meet character requirements. A $5,000 surety bond is required for agency licensure.
Physical Surveillance
Public surveillance is permitted. Indiana's GPS tracking statute is implicit through the stalking law (IC 35-45-10-5). Drone surveillance is constrained by IC 35-46-8.5-1, which limits drone use to capture images of private property.
Audio & Video Recording Consent
Indiana is a one-party-consent state under IC 35-31.5-2-176 and IC 35-33.5-1-5. The recording party must be a participant.
Domestic, Marital & Infidelity Investigations
Indiana allows fault-based divorce; adultery is one of several recognized grounds. PIs document matrimonial misconduct. Accessing a spouse's accounts is regulated under IC 35-43-1-4 (computer trespass).
Cybersecurity, Hacking & Digital Investigations
IC 35-43-1-4 and 35-43-2-3 (computer offenses) parallel the CFAA. Pretexting is barred federally. OSINT is permitted.
Missing Persons, Skip Tracing & Harassment
Indiana State Police maintain the missing-persons clearinghouse. DPPA fully applies. Indiana's stalking statute (IC 35-45-10-5) is broad.
